Service Project Details
Join us in the stunning Sierra Nevadas this summer for a week of trail maintenance in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness. A section of the River Trail in the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness is badly eroded and needs to be rebuilt. The purpose of this project is to remove these cribbing structures, clear away loose material, reestablish the bench and then replace the structure of the tread with gabion baskets. These baskets will be secured to the rock walls and bench in the area and filled with rocks found on-site and a short distance (<500 feet) away. There is also some general trail maintenance to be accomplished both up and down the trail from this project (water bars, brushing, etc).
Volunteers for this project will need to be comfortable/able to ford the Carson River on the way to and from camp which requires sure footing, working on loose slopes, and moving dirt and rock.
Vehicles with good clearance and 4WD would be desired. The road can be rough in spots but is generally accessible by something like a Subaru Outback. The location for this project would be just south of Heenan Lake and shuttling in people for the last few miles of dirt road is feasible.
