Do you like to see the fruits of your labor? If so, consider joining our 2022 Bryce Canyon National Park project! We’ll spend the week relocating slash produced from thinning operations to areas a safe distance away from conservation trees.
Service Project Details
The park is planning to conduct mechanical thinning of ponderosa and mixed conifer forests ahead of planned prescribed burns. To achieve the ecological objectives of restoring the natural age class distribution of ponderosa trees, the park will thin and remove overstocked smaller, younger trees in proximity to older “conservation” trees prior to conducting the prescribed burn. The park will need assistance from the Wilderness Volunteers to relocate slash produced from thinning operations to areas a safe distance away from conservation trees.
This project is similar to past fuel reduction projects and may include pile building. Worksites will be within a 5-mile range of the park’s developed area. Access will include driving to staging areas from the campgrounds along the park’s paved roads and possibly dirt roads on adjacent USFS lands, then short hikes to work sites from the staging area (less than 1 mile).
This is a high-elevation project: 7000′-9500′ ft.
