Help address backlogged trail maintenance issues on the North Fork John Day River Trail and the Silver Hill Trail, in the beautiful North Fork John Day Wilderness.
Service Project Details
This project will be addressing deferred maintenance issues from the past few years. North Fork John Day River Trail is the “flagship” trail of the North Fork John Day Wilderness, are is in need of brushing and tread work, as well as clearing. Another trail that feeds into the River trail, Silver Hill Trail, is extremely overgrown and impassable at the current.
Heavy brushing, clearing, and confidence markers are needed to re-open this .7mile trail. Volunteers will hike in with pack support for food, commissary, and tools, and camp at an established dispersed camp area along the North Fork John Day River trail. From there, volunteers will access the North Fork John Day River Trail and Silver Hill Trail to clear, brush, and maintain the trail to standard. The trails traverse through a few different landscapes – including large meadows, reproduction lodgepole pine stands, and old-growth Ponderosa/Western Larch. Due to the remoteness and many meadows of this area, wildlife sightings are likely.
This is a medium elevation project: beginning at 5,100′ and descending to ~3190′
