Service Project Details
Wilderness Volunteers returns to the mind-blowing Cecil D. Andrus-White Clouds Wilderness this summer. If you’re looking for a challenging and rewarding project, this is one to consider. Our volunteer group will work in the Boulder Chain Lakes area in the Cecil D. Andrus-White Clouds Wilderness. Work will focus on both high-priority wilderness stewardship tasks and trail maintenance. Volunteers will work along the 3.3-mile Boulder Chain Trail #683 addressing trail work needs including logout, brushing, cleaning drainage features, and tread work. Wilderness stewardship tasks include campsite naturalization, trash pickup, firepit removal, and social trail obliteration.
Volunteers for this project need to be able to backpack the 7.8-miles with 2,600′ gain comfortably, with the first 2 miles of this hike being steep and exposed through a sagebrush with no shade. The rest of the hike is quite gradual. Volunteers will also need to be able to hike up to 3-miles daily with a max elevation gain of 800′.
This is a high elevation project: 8,900+ ft. Volunteers should arrive in the area a few days before the project to allow for acclimation. There is a free, developed campground managed by the BLM at the Little Boulder Trailhead with water, picnic tables, and toilets.
