Service Project Details
Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) is working with Coconino National Forest, National Forest Foundation, Natural Channel Design (NCD), and others to restore and enhance areas along Oak Creek in Oak Creek Canyon. The goal of restoration and enhancement of these areas is to decrease the impact of the adjacent road (SR-89a) and 2 million annual visitors. Because of the recreational and ecological importance of this area, ADEQ is working on a waterway-wide approach to restoration and mitigation for the benefit of everyone.
This work will take place in the riparian area of Oak Creek and will primarily focus on managing erosion and closing unsanctioned social trails. Work will consist of low-to-moderate activity: some of the social trail areas are on steep slopes and require volunteers to be sure-footed. Most sites are within 5 minutes of the parking area. NCD/ADEQ will coordinate daily with the volunteers and direct and guide volunteers regarding the proper installation and set up of erosion control features such as one rock dams, log worm fences, brush closures, and cross log features.
