I’d put Idaho’s Sawtooth Wilderness and Virginia’s Washington & Jefferson National Forest (complete with its herds of “wild” ponies) near the top. How ’bout you?
I second the Sawtooths as one of the nation's best forests, but also up there are the forests in the Mt Hood Wilderness in Oregon (close enough to Portland for day hikes) and the Frank Church Wilderness north of the Sawtooths.
