Our volunteer group will help support the next stage of rehabilitation efforts in Mojave National Preserve. With Cima Road newly resurfaced and the construction of new pullouts complete, it’s now time for the next phase. Native plants grown from seed collected along the roadway now need to be planted in areas disturbed during this work. This project will involve planting up to 250 native plants to reestablish vegetation and stabilize roadside soils. Species will include Joshua tree seedlings, creosote, and three native perennial grass species. Preserve staff will identify and place planting locations, and volunteers will work alongside staff to plant and water in the vegetation.
Volunteers should expect to drive between planting locations. Walking will involve walking from plant to plant as they are planted. Volunteers will be expected to walk between 1 and 2 miles per day along Cima Road on gradually sloping terrain. Planting requires repetitive bending and using hand tools to dig holes for planting.
While high-clearance, 4WD vehicles are preferred, 2-wheel drive vehicles can make it to and from the Mid Hills Campground on a graded dirt road to the work site on Cima Road.
