Help the USFS replace a deteriorating and broken footlog crossing in the breathtaking high Sierras.
Service Project Details
The footlog utilized by hikers on the John Muir Trail to cross the outlet of 1000 Island Lake has broken. In 2022, stepping stones were placed downstream of the footlog, though they are frequently below the high water level and the public continues to cross on the unstable, cracked, and rotting logs. Our project will be replacing the existing foot logs in kind. 4 logs will be sourced from the nearest sites along the trail corridor and be moved to the project location by mule skid, carrying with log tongs, or both. Volunteers will need to be able to hike 7 miles into camp and 2 miles round trip daily during the project. Volunteers will need to be able to assist with moving heavy loads and/or carrying smaller loads, in addition to working in a wet environment.
Project Leaders: Kathleen Worley and Misha Kokotovic
