Spend a week in this mesmerizing Utah national park! Our project will include various vegetation management tasks throughout Bryce Canyon National Park, including:
- Piling slash created during mechanical thinning projects to help reduce accumulated hazardous fuels and lower the risk of catastrophic wildfire in the ponderosa forests. Fuels reduction slash piling will take place within a culturally sensitive area. Branches and logs will need to be carried several hundred feet and piled outside the mapped site to avoid impacts to important cultural resources.
- Repair broken barbed wire fence to keep cattle on adjacent Dixie National Forest grazing allotments from entering NPS administered lands. Cattle cause damage to water, soil, and vegetation resources in the park.
- Collect native seed to be used in upcoming restoration projects. Native grasses and forbs are valuable in recovering disturbed areas, and the park needs lots of hands to help collect them.
- Reduce woody vegetation encroachment in Utah Prairie Dog (Cynomys parvidens) habitat. This involves the use of hand saws to cut and scatter small trees and shrubs encroaching into grassland meadows.
Volunteers will be able to lift heavy objects periodically (up to 40 lbs), hike up to 5 miles on and off trail, and complete repetitive tasks in an outdoor environment at 8000 feet of elevation.
Fence work may require travel on forest service roads that are generally passable with a 2WD passenger car but could be impassable due to weather. We will try to use only government vehicles. All other projects have paved highway access to trailheads/staging areas. Carpooling is highly encouraged as parking in some areas is very limited.
