Service Project Details
From the 13,063-foot summit of Wheeler Peak to the sagebrush-covered foothills, Great Basin National Park hosts a sample of the incredible diversity of the larger Great Basin region. Spend a week working with the NPS trail crew on trail maintenance and construction on the Shoshone Trail or Snake Creek Trail. Work may include:
- Clears brush and fallen logs from trail corridor; cleans, repairs, and constructs log or rock drains; installs log or rock retainer bars/steps and checks and/or constructs foot and stock bridges from native materials.
- Constructs and maintains trail structures such as turnpikes, causeways, cribbing trail tread, riprap and rock retaining walls.
- Constructs new segments of trail; and performs rehabilitation and meadow restoration on abandoned or heavily impacted sections of trail.
The work performed requires strenuous physical effort while working at altitudes between 7,000 to 10,000 feet above sea level, in the high desert of Great Basin National Park. Volunteers should be prepared to routinely lift, push, pull, and carry items weighing ~40 pounds. Work will routinely require walking approximately 5 miles per day over moderate to steep park trails, to and from the job sites. Volunteers for this project should expect longer hiking commutes due to elevation.

Hike any of the many trails in the park or in the surrounding areas (see website for local attractions). Hike to the top of Wheeler Peak (13,063 feet above sea level). Visit the warm springs and Crystal Ball Cave in Gandy. Because of our remoteness from so many places, exploring the amazing Great Basin National Park would be best.
