Non-native, invasive tumbleweed plants (a.k.a. Russian Thistle) blow into our boundary fences and clog them up, sometimes to a height and depth of 10 feet! This makes it impossible for pronghorn to enter/exit Wupatki National Monument, the largest ungrazed grassland from Sedona to the Grand Canyon. This area is an important fawning ground and “refuge” for pronghorn. Volunteers will lift and throw tumbleweeds (gloves provided) on the other side of the fence and/or use heavy rakes/shovels (provided) to crush the tumbleweed skeletons. Volunteers may also help to pull mullein, another non-native, invasive plant, on the slopes of Sunset Crater Volcano and Lenox Crater.
