Our volunteer group will assist the Park Botany Specialist with removal of small diameter Lodgepole pine saplings that are encroaching into sub-alpine meadows. This encroachment threatens the integrity of native plant wetland species and distribution, as well as meadow hydrology, by facilitating the movement of upland herbaceous species into the meadow. Up to six meadows may be treated during this project. Project work would include manual removal of saplings that measure at or below 6 inches in diameter, and removal would be achieved by use of hand tools, such as loppers and hand saws. Woody debris would be scattered or piled beyond the edges of the meadow.
If the primary project is completed quicker than anticipated, invasive plant removal will be implemented as a secondary project. The volunteer group would aid our Invasive Plant crew lead and staff to achieve the goals of the Invasive Plant Management Team (IPMT). Treatments would include manual (hand tools) treatment of some of our high priority invasives, including cheatgrass, bull thistle, and mullein. These treatments may include front country and backcountry populations. Invasive plant removal is an essential part of post-fire ecosystem restoration, allowing native plants to reestablish in treated areas.
Meadow treatments will be conducted in front-country areas, with easy access to restrooms. Volunteers should feel comfortable using hand tools such as loppers and handsaws and carrying a backpack with their personal supplies.
